Mrs. Spencer's 7th grade ELA Page

Welcome to 7th grade English Language Arts class. My name is Karen Spencer, and this is my 19th year as a public school teacher.  I am a 1993 graduate of Appalachian State University where I was a NC Teaching Fellow, majoring in history and secondary education.  I later earned teacher certification in middle grades English language arts and social studies, as well as K-12 AIG  (academically or intellectually gifted). It has been my pleasure to teach in a variety of grades over the years, but middle school has been my favorite!  I spent most of my early career in Yadkin County, and then was blessed to get to be a stay-at-home-mom for five years after my second child was born.  I have been employed with Elkin City Schools since 2012, first as the AIG teacher and coordinator, and now as the 7th grade ELA teacher.  I couldn't imagine having any other career than teaching.  It is my passion and my calling.  Teaching ELA provides so many opportunities  to impact students for a lifetime with a focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

When I am not teaching, my hobbies are reading on my front porch, scrap-booking and photography, gardening, and eating!  I also love spending time with my family.  I have been married to Scott Spencer for 23 years, and we have two terrific sons. Brendan is 2016 graduate of Elkin High School and currently a sophomore engineering major at UNC-Charlotte, and Benjamin is a 5th grader at Elkin Elementary.  We love to go on hikes, try new restaurants, travel to the beach and the mountains, and play with our German shepherd puppy, Scout. Serving in our church, Shady Grove Baptist, is also important to us.
